How to Furnish and Design an Airbnb in Kenya That Gets Booked
By KejaPal Interior Designers,
Short-stay rentals have grown quickly across Kenya, from Kilimani, Westlands and Kileleshwa apartments to holiday homes in Diani, Watamu, Malindi and Naivasha. With so many listings, the interior is often what makes guests choose your place — and what earns the reviews that keep it booked. Here's how to design and furnish an Airbnb in Kenya that stands out.
1. Know your guest
Before buying anything, decide who you're designing for. A Westlands one-bedroom might attract business travellers who need a desk, fast Wi-Fi and blackout curtains. A Diani villa attracts families and groups who want outdoor lounging and plenty of beds. A Naivasha cottage might attract couples looking for a romantic getaway. The interior should answer their needs first.
2. Design for photos
Guests decide in seconds while scrolling. Every room needs a "hero shot": a styled bed with layered bedding and a statement headboard, a living room with a feature wall, a kitchen that looks clean and bright. Natural light, a clear colour story and one or two eye-catching features photograph far better than lots of small items.
3. Choose a clear, timeless style
Popular Airbnb styles in Kenya include warm minimalism, modern Afro-contemporary with local textiles and art, and coastal Swahili-inspired interiors with natural timber, rattan and white walls. Pick one and apply it consistently so the space feels designed, not furnished in a rush.
4. Invest in the bed
Sleep quality drives reviews. Buy the best mattress you can, add mattress protectors, quality pillows in two firmness levels and at least three sets of white or neutral bedding per bed so turnovers are easy. Blackout curtains are essential in city apartments.
5. Furnish for durability and easy cleaning
- Choose performance or removable-cover upholstery in mid-tones that hide marks
- Use SPC, tiles or sealed timber floors rather than wall-to-wall carpet
- Pick washable paint and wipeable surfaces
- Avoid fragile décor — guests will move and break things
6. Stock the essentials guests look for
A fully equipped kitchen, a kettle and coffee maker, fast Wi-Fi, a smart TV, an iron and board, a hairdryer, enough hangers, power backup for key lights and Wi-Fi, and secure, simple self check-in. These details show up again and again in five-star reviews.
7. Light it well
Combine bright ceiling lights for cleaning with warm lamps and LED strips for atmosphere. In living rooms, a gypsum ceiling with cove lighting instantly makes a listing feel premium.
8. Add local character
Guests love a sense of place. Kenyan art, kiondo baskets, kikoy throws, carved wood and locally made furniture add personality and set your listing apart from identical rentals in the same building.
9. Plan storage for you and for guests
Lockable owner storage for spare linen and supplies makes turnovers faster. Guests need space to unpack: hanging space, drawers and a luggage rack in every bedroom.
10. Think about returns, not just looks
Good design should help you charge more and stay booked. Spend on what guests notice and touch — the bed, the sofa, lighting, the feature wall — and save on items they don't. Neutral, durable finishes keep maintenance low and make refreshes simple.
